Komorebi Book Club

A Vancouver Island book club for Japanese Canadians

Komorebi : 木漏れ日 A Japanese term that describes how the rays of sunlight filters through the trees and the feeling this image invokes.

This project is the first of its kind in BC. It is funded by the Anglican Healing Fund, to support the healing of the intergenerational trauma caused by the incarceration of the Nikkei in Canada. The organizers have brought in local authors, experts, and educators who specialize in Nikkei history on Vancouver Island. Until recently, I did not know there were so many thriving Japanese Canadian communities all over Vancouver Island. The organizers had the incredible foresight to create this group with a trauma responsive framework. As it was anticipated that difficult themes such as grief, displacement, racial oppression, loss of ties to culture and language would emerge, they felt it would be imperative to have support for participants. My role for these book club meetings have been to support any folks that may need a compassionate listening ear.
